Types of Fractures / Clinical Conditions Flashcards
Open (compound) fracture
broken ends of the bone protrude through the skin
Closed (simple) fracture
does not break the skin
Comminuted fracture
bone is splintered, crushed, or broken into pieces
Greenstick fracture
partial fracture in which one side of the bone is broken and the other side bends
Impacted fracture
one end of the fractured bone is forcefully driven into another
Pott’s fracture
fracture of the fibula, with injury of the tibial articulation.
a fracture of the lower fibula and of the malleolus of the tibia, resulting in outward displacement of the foot.
Colles’ fracture
fracture of the radius in which the distal fragment is displaced.
Is a fracture of the distal radius with dorsal (posterior) displacement of the wrist and hand
Stress fracture
a series of microscopic fissures in bone
Osteomalacia (in adult)
inadequately mineralized bones [softening of bone tissue] insufficient dietary calcium insufficient vitamin D
Rickets [Children’s form of osteomalacia]
more detrimental bowed legs, and deformities of the pelvis, ribs, and skull.
lack of vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate.
Osteoporosis
decreased bone mass / bone mineral density resulting in porous bones 44 million U.S. women & men [50 Y and older]
