Types Of Formula Flashcards
What is the molecular formula?
The formula which gives the actual number of atoms in each element in that one molocule.
What is empirical formula?
The simplest ratio of atoms of each element in the compound.
What is general formula?
The number of atoms of each element in a compound with n number of carbons.
What is a homologous seris?
A series which all have the same general formula, similar chemical properties and a trend in boiling points but a different number of carbon atoms.
What is the general formula for alkanes?
Cn H2n+2
What is the general formula for alkenes (double bonds)?
Cn H2n
What is structural formula?
Shows how many atoms are joined together in a molecule without showing every bond to a C atom.
E.g: CH3CH2CH2CH3
How many bonds can each carbon form?
4
What is displayed formula?
Shows all bonds and atoms in a molecule.
H H H
I I I
H–C–C–C–H
I I I
H H H
What is skeletal formula?
Uses lines to represent bonds so each point is a C atom and bonds to a H atom are not shown.
