What is a functional group?
A group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a particular compound.
How is the position of a functional group noted?
With the lowest possible number
What is the rules for naming a side chain?
-Ends in -yl.
-For 2 of the group use di and two numbers
-For 3 of a group use tri and three numbers.
-For 4 of the group use tetra and 4 numbers
If a compound is a complete ring what is it?
A cyclic compound.

What are the rules when naming a halogenalkane?
-Use fluro/chloro/bromo/ido.
-Functional group names are ordered alphabetically.

-always need a number.

In the middle of the chain
What is an aldehyde or ketone group?
A carbon double bonded to an oxygen.
What is an alcohol group shown by?
An oxygen bonded to a hydrogen.
