Types Of Experiments Flashcards
Lab strengths
High levels of control , extraneous variables avoided , measure the effect on the DV infer cause and effect
Highly reliable - high levels of control - standardised procedure making it easy to repeat
Lab weaknesses
Low in ecological validity - hard to generalise results
Demand characteristics or responds to social desirability bias
Low in mundane realism not representative of task completed in everyday life
Field explanation
Conducted in pps own environment
Field strengths
High ecological validity
No demand characteristics
Field weaknesses
Can’t fully control the situation for IV to measure the effect on the advice therefore not infer cause and effect - extraneous variables
Not reliable not standardised procedure
Ethical issues
Quasi explanation
IV is naturally occurring and therefore not manipulated
Quasi strengths
IV not manipulated - more ecologically valid
Quasi weaknesses
May have low sample not representative to target population , long time to find recruit pps
Laboratory explanation
Conducted in highly controlled conditions and usually in laboratory settings
