Observations Flashcards
Controlled environment
Participants behaviour recorded in a situation created by researcher
Participant explanation
Researcher pretends to be a participant to observe them
Naturalistic strengths
High ecological validity
No demand characteristics
No Social desirability bias ( isn’t highly controlled)
Controlled strengths
Levels of control are quite high extraneous variables are controlled
Reliable - standardised procedure
Participant strengths
Adds richness of data if they become trusted member of group therefore high in validity
Could be access to data which unobtainable by other methods more depth info is discovered
Naturalistic weaknesses
If realise they are being watched demand characteristics making it less valid
Pps own environment harder to replicate
Can’t infer cause and effect
Controlled weaknesses
Participant is likely to know they are being observed because situation is controlled demand characteristics lowering validity
Participant weaknesses
Could alter the group when joining lowering the validity
Observer bias only recording what they want to see or become emotionally involved and report observations in a subjective way
Event sampling strengths and weaknesses
No behaviour is missed
Difficult to record behaviour if too manny are displayed at once
Time sampling strengths and weaknesses
Less intensive as there aren’t many behaviours displayed at once
Behaviour that occurs outside of the time can’t be recorded
Naturalistic explanation
Participants behaviour recorded in their own environment
