Types of experiments Flashcards
LABORATORY EXPERIMENT
- investigation with IV, DV, and strict controls
- conducted in laboratory setting (where environment can be controlled)
- looks for casual relationships
+ high levels of control (more confident that only IV is affecting DV)
+ high internal validity (less uncontrolled variables)
+ standardisation (increase reliability & replicability)
+ equipment (may only be available in lab)
+ ethics - consent & right to withdraw
- artificial task - lacks mundane realism and low eco validity
- artificial environment - not representative of real environment (increase risk of demand characteristics)
FIELD EXPERIMENT
- IV is manipulated and expected to be responsible for changes in DV
- looks for casual relationship
- conducted in natural setting
- behaviour being investigated
+ natural setting - high eco validity - Ps more likely to behave naturally (reduces demand characteristics)
+ mundane realism
+ increase generalisability results
- low level of control - decrease reliability & replicability
- low internal validity (more uncontrolled variables)
- ethics - harder to gain consent - Ps don’t know they’re being studied - no right to withdraw
