- must use species of animal that is ethically and scientifically appropriate
- will this species suffer the least
- was the animal born in captivity

NUMBERS
A
- should use smallest number of animals possible to achieve aim
- DOESN’T MEAN LESS ANIMALS FOR LONGER HOURS
- pilot study, good experimental design, and data analysis will help reduce numbers

PROCEDURES: PAIN AND DISTRESS

- avoid causing death, disease, physical, psychological discomfort
- surgical procedures need anaesthesia

HOUSING
A
- social and natural behaviour of species should be considered when housing
- sufficient space to move freely
- social animals shouldn’t be isolated
- non social animals shouldn’t be overcrowded

REWARD, DEPRIVATION, & AVERSIVE STIMULI

- should not be deprived of food and water below normal habits
- preferred food rewards should be considered as an alternative to deprivation to keep motivation levels high
- aversive stimuli: electric shocks, noises, unpleasant taste
