Sampling of Participants Flashcards
SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
method used to obtain participants from target population
SAMPLE
group selected to represent target population
VOLUNTEER SAMPLE
Ps put themselves forward to participate in study after seeing advertisement
+ reduces cost of recruiting Ps and saves time
+ easy access to volunteers through social media platforms
- unlikely to be representative/limited generalisability
- difficult reaching specific demographics
OPPORTUNITY SAMPLE
Ps chosen because they’re available at the time
+ may lead to larger sample
+ quick and easy
- Ps may reject
- may not be representative of target population - sampling bias - findings lack external validity as less generalisable
RANDOM SAMPLE
all members of population are identified - fixed amount are selected in random, unbiased way (e.g names in a hat)
+ reliable
+ unbiased
- expensive
- time consuming
POPULATION
a group sharing one or more characteristics - where a sample is drawn from
GENERALISABILITY
the extent to which findings from a study can be applied to the target population being investigated
REPRESENTATIVE
typical of a setting, situation or group of people - therefore generalisable
- larger sample = increase reliability/representative/generalisable
