Types of experiments Flashcards
what are lab experiments
experiments done in a lab
strengths of a lab experiment
high control over extraneous variables (age, gender, etc)
replication more possible (vital to check that results are valid)
limitations of a lab experiment
lacks real life application (generalisability)
results are artificial as they have been done in a lab
what is a field experiment
in a natural setting, but the environment is not controlled
strength of a field experiment
higher mundane realism (NATURAL ENVIRONMENT)
limitation of a field experiment
less control of extraneous variables if you are doing it when the participants are unaware of being studies
what is a natural experiment
IV is not controlled, occurs naturally
strengths of a natural experiment
high external validity as it is based on real life issues
limitations of a natural experiment
it is a naturally occuring event so it may happen rarely (you are not making up situations
difficult to generalise as it is happening rarely to particular people
what is a quasi experiment
a study that is almost an experiment but lacks key ingredients like the IV (there is nothing to change)
strengths of a quasi experiment
controlled conditions high internal validity
replication more possible
limitations of a quasi experiment
