Control of variables Flashcards
extraneous variables
any variable other than the IV that affects the DV
confounding variables
the same as the extraneous BUT VARY WITH THE IV
not sure of the true source of change to the DV
demand characteristics
cues from the researcher/situation which may be interpreted by the participants as revealing a purpose of the study
therefore they may behave in a way that they THINK is expected
investigator effects
unconscious OR conscious behaviour of the investigator (researcher) that can effect the outcome of the DV (smiling more at the particpiants, leading questions)
randomisation
the use of chance to control the effects of bias as a way to control investigator effects
standardisation
using identical procedures/insturctions for all participants
