Sampling Flashcards
population
group of people that are the focus of the researchers interest
what is sampling
when a group is drawn from the population
random sample
all members of population have equal chance of selection (random number generator used)
pros of random sampling
no researcher bias (they havent chosen a specific demographic)
cons of random sampling
difficult and time consuming, there is a rare chance that there could be a limited variety of people
what is a systematic sample
every nth number selected from the list
pros of systematic sample
avoids researcher bias and is fairly representative
cons of systematic sample
time consuming
what is stratified sampling
pros of stratified sampling
avoids researcher bias and is very representative
cons of stratified sampling
complete representation is not possible
what is an oppotunity sample
researchers choose whoever is willing and able
pros of an oppotunity sample
convinient and less costly, less time consuming
cons of an oppotunity sample
not a good representative as it is not random
what is volunteer sampling
particpants select themselves to be a part of the sample
