Types of experiment Flashcards
Where does a lab experiment take place?
In a controlled environment
What are 2 strengths of a lab experiment?
- High control over confounding and extraneous variables
- Replication is more possible
What do lab experiments lack?
- They lack generalisability
- Lab experiment may be artificial
Do lab experiments have high or low external validity?
Low
Where do field experiments take place?
In a natural, everyday setting
What are 2 strengths of a field experiment?
- High mundane realism
- Produces more valid and authentic behaviour
What is a limitation of a field experiment?
There is a loss of CV’s and EV’s
What ethical issues occur within field experiments?
- They are unaware they are being studied so can’t consent
- An invasion of privacy
What differs a natural experiment from a lab or field experiment?
In natural experiments the researcher has no control over the IV
Is a Quasi experiment a true experiment?
No
What is a strength of a Quasi experiment?
They are carried out in controlled environments
What is a limitation of a Quasi experiment?
Can’t randomly allocate participants to a condition
What is the definition of a pilot study?
A small scale version of a study carried out before the main study
Why are pilot studies used?
To check that the main study runs smoothly
What is the aim of a pilot study?
To identify any flaws in the study and carry out modifications before doing the full scale study
