It depends on the purpose and aims of the specific research
What are the 3 advantages of qualitative data?
- Provodes richer detail
- Gives the participant the opportunity to fully report their thoughts and opinions
- Has greater external validity
What is the disadvantage of qualitative data?
It is more difficult to analyse as patterns and comparisons are harder to identify

- Simple to analyse
- More objective
- Less open to bias
What is the disadvantage of quantitative data?
It fails to represent ‘real-life’
What is primary data?
Data that has been collected specifically for the purpose of the investigation
What data would be classed as primary data?
Any collected from a questionnaire or interview
What is secondary data?
Dtaa that has been collected by someone else rather than the person conducting the investigation
What data would be classed as secondary data?
Any that is in articles, books or on websites
What is the advantage of primary data?
It is authentic as it is taken from the participant(s) themself
What is the disadvantage of primary data?
Producing the data takes lots of time, effort and planning
