Types of epithelium/cells Flashcards
epithelium, cells, transformational disease
Describe the function of simple squamous epithelium
transport or absorption
Describe the function of simple cuboidal epithelium
secretion, absorption and excretion
Describe the function of simple columnar epithelium
protective, secretory, absorptive, excretory
Describe the function of pseudostratified epithelium
secretion or absorption
Describe the function of stratified columnar epithelium
protects and secretes
Where is simple squamous epithelium found?
capillary lining, blood vessels, alveoli, glomeruli, endocardium and mesothelium
Where is simple cuboidal epithelium found?
salivary ducts, liver, pancreas, thyroid follicles, kidney tubules and seminiferous tubules
Where is simple columnar epithelium found?
stomach, gallbladder and intestines
Where is pseudostratified epithelium found?
upper respitory tract, uterine tubules, epididymis
Where is stratified columnar epithelium found?
RARE. conjunctiva, mammary and salivary glands. sensory epithelium is a specialised version eg. retina, taste buds, organ of Corti
