Representative Democracy
Voters choose representatives to vote for them on most government issues
Direct democracy
people vote for every decision the government makes.
Participatory democracy
emphasizes broad participation in politics and civil society by citizens at various levels or socioeconomic status
Pluralist democracy
emphasizes group-based activism by nongovernmental interests striving for impact on political decision making.
Elite democracy
Discourage participation in politics and civil society by the majority of citizens and gives power to the educated and/or wealthy
Participatory Democracy definition
A model of democracy where citizens have the power to decide directly on policy and politicians are responsible for implementing those policies.

An initiative is a process that enables citizens to propose or initiate a law or amendment. Usually initiated through the collection of a certain number of signatures, it is then voted on.
referendum
Process through which voters may vote on new laws (approve or reject) proposed by the government. One of the several Progressive Era reforms that increased voters power in government.
Pluralist Democracy defintion
Definition: A model of democracy where decisions are made through negotiations between groups and organizations, rather than by individuals.
Historical Context Pluralist Democracy
Developed as societies became more complex and diverse, necessitating negotiation and compromise between various interest groups.

Modern Manifestation: Seen in lobbying efforts, interest group activities, and negotiations between different groups to influence policy decisions.

A lobbyist is an individual or group seeking to influence government decision-making on specific issues or pieces of legislation.
interest group
is an organization formed by individuals sharing common objectives, seeking to influence public policy and government decisions in a manner that favors their interests or causes.
