Natural Rights
John Locke comes up with the idea of Natural Rights
Rights that cannot be taken away Life,liberty, and property were natural Rights granted by god; and it is the governments duty to respect and protect those rights. If the government did not, Locke contended, the citizens have the right to revolution

Social contract
An implicit agreement among the people in a society to give up some freedoms to maintain all social order
Popular sovereignty
All government power comes from consent of the people
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
The only good government was the one that was freely formed with the consent of the people.
Limited Government
a government’s power cannot be absolute
The limited government is limited in power by laws.
The limitations typically take place in the form of a written constitution, democratic elections, separation of powers, and a strong judicial system.
Separation of Powers
Charles de Montesquieu separating the different powers of the government into 3 different branches.
Checks and Balances
each branch of government is assigned distinct powers and responsibilities to ensure no one branch oversteps its authority and becomes too powerful. Limits the power of each branch.
Federalism
mixed form of government that combines a federal government with a state/regional government.
Republicanism
idea that people exercise their power by voting for a political representative (representative democracy)

Sacrificing some freedoms to be protected by the federal government
