Types of data Flashcards
Which data is numerical and can be measured and quantified?
Quantitative data
Which data is non-numerical and provides descriptive data in depth?
Qualitative data
Primary data
Original data which is collected directly be a researcher for a specific research purpose
Secondary data
Pre-existing data which is collected for different reasons. It can then be repurposed for the researcher’s study
Quantitative data evaluation
strengths
- Simple to analyse
- Easy to use for graphs
- More objective
weaknesses
- Lacks detail, therefore not always useful
Qualitative data evaluation
strengths
- Richer detail which allows a fuller expansion
- More meaningful insight
weaknesses
- Time consuming
- Subjective - open to interpretation
Primary data evaluation
Strengths
- Authentic demographic data that fits research purposes
weaknesses
- Time consuming to conduct research and gather data
Secondary data evaluation
Strengths
- Inexpensive and easily accessed in a timely manner
weaknesses
- Previous data might not be reliable
could be a variation in quality
Meta analysis
A method that uses secondary data. It uses many studies of the same topic/hypothesis. Then puts these together to come to an overall conclusion
Meta analysis evaluation
strengths
- Provides a more precise estimate of the effect size
weaknesses
- Might be prone to publication bias
