Self report - interviews Flashcards
What are the different types of interviews?
Structured, semi structured and unstructured
Structured interview
They follow a pre-determined set of questions in a specific order. They interviewer does not deviate from these questions
Structured evaluation
Strengths
- Can collect useful demographic
data - gather relevant
responses
- Results can be checked for
reliability - Replicable
- Easier to conduct an objective
analysis.
Weaknesses
- Doesn’t allows respondents to
expand - reduces validity
Semi structured interview
They have guided frame work of topics but allow for flexibility in how they are addressed
Semi structured evaluation
Strengths
- Allowed to ask follow up
questions
- More detail in depth data
Weaknesses
- Highly trained interviewers
(more costly)
- Only reliable and comparable
to a certain extent (affects
consistency and replicability)
- May be subjective to
interpretation.
Unstructured interview
They have a set topic but do not follow a specific set of questions.
Unstructured evaluation
Strengths
- Less likely to show demand
characteristics as they lead the
questions
- Most likely to get ecologically
valid data
Weaknesses
- Impossible to replicate
(unreliable)
- Data difficult to use for
comparison
Interview strengths
- You can collect useful
demographic data about the
respondents. - Allows people to freely express
themselves - Allows researcher to clarify the
significance of the information
being provided.
Interview weaknesses
- Training can be costly
- Greater chance of investigator
effects
