Types of data Flashcards
What is primary data/strengths and weaknesses of it
Original data collected by researcher for a specific study
Strengths:
Authentic data- Data collection is specific to study/aim - cause and effect - reduces unwanted data
Weaknesses:
Time consuming/expensive
What is secondary data/strengths and weaknesses
Data collected by someone else
Strengths:
Not expensive
Quick and convenient
Weaknesses:
May be outdated
May not suit researchers aim completely
What is quantitative data/strengths and weaknesses
Data that can be analysed statistically e.g. numerical data
Strengths:
Easy to analyse
Objective
Weaknesses:
Lack of detail
What is qualitative data/strengths and weaknesses
Rich detailed data
Non numerical
Strengths:
Rich data
Weaknesses:
Difficult to analyse
Subjective
What is a meta analysis/strengths and weaknesses
Type of secondary data
Combines data from multiple similar studies to create an overall view
Strengths:
Quick/convenient - Data already exists
Increases generalisability as conclusions are based on a large sample
Weaknesses:
Studies may use different experimental designs and data collection methods so its not 100% comparable
Researcher could be biased when choosing specific studies for meta analysis
