Social desirability
Lack of options/questions that represent the participant e.g. in questionnares and structured interviews
What is social desirability
Participants respond dishonestly to look more favourable
What is a structured interview
Interview has predetermined questions in a fixed order
What is a semi structured interview
Fixed questions with flexibility for follow up questions
What is an unstructured interview
No predetermined questions but there are prompts to encourage more responses
Advantages and disadvantages of structured interviews
Advantages: Easily replicable (standardised)
Disadvantages:
Different interviewers behave differently(interviewer bias and interviewer effects)

Advantages:
More detailed due to more flexibility
Disadvantages:
Requires skilled interviewers
Difficult to analyse
No structure so difficult to replicate

Set of questions answered on paper

Less pressure so more info
Less time consuming/less resources needed
Disadvantages:
Social desirability
Biased - Can only be done by people who can read and write

Questions with no fixed response

Detailed responses
Disadvantages:
Difficult to analyse

Questions with fixed answers

Easy to analyse quantitative data
