What’s quantitative data?
Numerical data. E.g. reaction time or number of mistakes.
What are advantages of quantitative data?
Easier to analyse. Can draw graphs etc.
What are disadvantages of quantitative data?
Oversimplifies behaviour.
What’s qualitative data?
Non-numerical data expressed in words. E.g. extract from a diary.
What are advantages of qualitative data?
Represents complexities. More detail included, e.g. explaining feelings.
What are disadvantages of qualitative data?
Less easy to analyse.
What’s primary data?
‘First hand’ data collected for the purpose of the investigation.
What are advantages and disadvantages of primary data?
+Fits the job.
-Requires time and effort.
What’s secondary data?
Collected by someone other than the person who is conducting the research, e.g. taken from books, websites etc.
What are advantages and disadvantages of secondary data?
+Inexpensive.
-Quality may be poor - validity problems.
What’s meta-analysis?
A type of secondary data that involves combining data from a large number of studies.
What are advantages and disadvantages of meta-analysis?
+Increases validity of conclusions.
-Publication bias.
