Q

What is naturalistic observation?

A

•Takes place where the target behaviour would normally occur.

Q

What are advantages of controlled observation?

A

•Can be replicated - findings can be checked again to see if they occur.

9
Q

What are advantages of covert observation?

A
  • Demand characteristics reduced.

* This increases validity of study.

16
Q

What are disadvantages of participants observation?

A

•Possibly loss of objectivity.

17
Q

What’s non-participants observation?

A

When the researcher remains separate from the group they are studying.

18
Q

What are advantages of non-participants observation?

A

•More objective.

-Researcher is far away so less chance of bias.

19
Q

What are disadvantages of non-participant observation?

A

•Loss of insight.

20
Q

What are the 3 observational designs?

A
  • Behavioural categories.
  • Time sampling.
  • Event sampling.
21
Q

What are behavioural categories?

A

The target behaviour to be observed should be broken up in to observable categories. Similar to the idea of generalisation.

22
Q

What are disadvantages of behavioural categories?

A

•Difficult to make clear and unambiguous.

23
Q

What is time sampling?

A

Observations that are made at regular intervals, e.g. once every 15 seconds.

24
Q

What are advantages of time sampling?

A

•Reduces the number of observations.

25
Q

What are disadvantages of time sampling?

A

•May be unrepresentative.

26
Q

What’s event sampling?

A

A target behaviour/event is recorded every time it occurs.

27
Q

What are advantages of event sampling?

A

•May record infrequent behaviour.

28
Q

What are disadvantages of event sampling?

A

•Complex behaviour is oversimplified.

-Validity is affected.
