- Get permission.
* Participants should be able to make the choice if they want to partake.
How can informed consent affect the research?
•Too much information may affect participants behaviour.
What are alternative forms of consent?
- Presumptive- ask a similar group.
- Prior general- agree to be deceived.
- Retrospective- get consent after the study.
What is deception as an ethical issue?
•Deliberately misleading or withholding information so consent is not informed.
How can the researcher stop the ethical issue of deception?
At end of study advice participants of: •True aims of investigation. •Details that were not given. •What the data will be used for. •Their right to withhold data.
How is risk an ethical issue?
•Participants should be at no more risk than they would be in everyday life.
How can the researcher stop the ethical issue of risk?
- Should be given choice to withdraw at any time.
- Should be reassured that their behaviour is normal.
- Should provide counselling if needed.
How is privacy/confidentiality an ethical issue?
- Should have the right to control information about ourselves.
- If this is invaded, confidentiality should be respected.
How can the researcher stop the ethical issue of privacy/confidentiality?
- Researchers refer to participants using numbers, initials, etc.
- Personal details must be protected.
