Verbal guidance
Where the describes and explains how to perform an activity
+ of verbal
Can reinforce good movements and identify errors that need to be corrected
Can hold attention of the performer and be motivating (positive feedback)
- of verbal
Could lead to information overload
If guidance is inaccurate learning will be hindered
Visual guidance
Used images such as visual demonstrations to show the performer how to do the skill
Whilst highlighting key cues
+ of visual
Helps develop mental image
Encourages observational learning (SLT)
Useful at all stage of learning
- of visual
If inaccurate demonstration bad habits form
Coach may not be able to show good demonstration
May be unclear or too quick
Manual guidance
Where the coach themselves physically helps the performer through the movement of the skill
E.g. Holding arms of performer through a golf swing
Mechanical guidance
The use of a mechanical device to help the performer through a skill
E.g. Twisting belt in trampolining
+ of manual/mechanical
Helps with confidence and a sense of safety
Can be used to isolate a skill action e.g. Holding a float and practising leg kick in swimming
- of manual/mechanical
Can be over-restrictive performer may feel like they lack control
Can lead to false kinaesthesis
