What is conformity?
A change in a person’s behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from the majority.
What are the three types of conformity?
Compliance, identification and internalisation
What is compliance?
When an individual conforms to a group publicly, but disagrees with them privately.
What is identification?
When an individual temporarily adopts the behaviour of a role model or a group
What is internalisation?
When an individual adopts the views of the majority both publicly and privately
What is the strongest type of conformity?
Internalisation
Which is the weakest and most superficial type of conformity?
Compliance
What are the two explanations for conformity?
Normative social influence (NSI) and Informational social influence (ISI)
What is NSI?
When someone conforms due to a desire to fit in and avoid rejection from the group
What is ISI?
When someone conforms due to a desire to be correct
