Resistance to social influence Flashcards
What is resistance to social influence?
When an individual resists social pressure to obey or conform
What is locus of control?
How responsible an individual feels for their actions
What is an internal locus of control?
Belief that behaviour caused is by personal decisions/in control of behaviour
What is an external locus of control?
Belief that behaviour is the result of external factors (luck)
Which type of LOC is more likely to resist social influence?
Internal LOC
Which type of LOC is less likely to resist social influence?
External LOC
What are the 2 AO3 points of LOC?
1) Contradictory research
2) Research support
What has been found about the LOC of young people?
It is becoming more external
Who conducted a meta-analysis on LOC studies?
Twenge et al
What did Twenge et al find?
That young Americans have increasingly believed that their fate was determined by luck and powerful others rather than their own actions
What has happened to the LOC scores of students from 1960-2002?
They’ve become more external
What did Twenge et al find regarding obedience?
There has been an increase in resistance to obedience since 1960
Who repeated Milgram’s study to look at LOC?
Holland
In Holland’s study, what percentage of those with an internal LOC didn’t continue to 450v?
37%
In Holland’s study, what percentage of those with an external LOC didn’t continue to 450v?
24%
What do Holland’s findings increase?
The reliability of the LOC explanation of resistance to social influence
What is social support?
When a peer provides support by resisting social influence
Why does social support increase resistance to social influence?
Seeing others disobey/resist social influence gives the observer confidence to do so
What are the 2 types of social support?
Disobedient role model or dissenting peer (ally)
What did Asch find when he gave his participants a confederate ally?
Conformity dropped from 33% to 5.5%
What are the 2 AO3 points of social support?
1) Research support
2) RWA
Who provides research support for social support?
Albrecht
What did Albrecht evaluate?
A programme aimed at helping pregnant teenagers resist smoking
In Albrecht’s study, how were the teenagers given social support?
They were assigned a mentor
How long was Albrecht’s programme?
8 weeks
What did Albrecht find?
That participants with a mentor were more likely to resist social influence compared to the control group
What event provides real world support for social support?
The Rosenstrasse protest
When was the Rosenstrasse protest?
1943
Who were the protesters in the Rosenstrasse protest?
A group of German women
What was being protested for in the Rosenstrasse protest?
For the Gestapo to release 2000 Jewish men
What did the Gestapo threaten to do to the women protesting in the Rosenstrasse protest?
Open fire on them
What was the end result of the Rosenstrasse protest?
The Jewish men were set free
What real-life event does Milgram’s findings have applications to?
Rosenstrasse protest
