Type Of Joints Flashcards
Synarthrodial
(Immovable fibrous joints)
Suture
Immovable joints
Syndesmosis
Joint held together by strong ligament structures that allow minimal movement
Ex. Coracoclavicular joint
Inferior joint
Gomphosis
Found in the sockets of the teeth in which a conical peg into a socket minimal amount of movement
Amphiarthrodial
(Slightly movable cartilaginous) joints
Symphysis
Type of joint separated by fibrous cartilage pad that allows very slight movement
Synochondrosis
Type of joint separated by hyaline cartilage that allows very slight movement
Hyaline costal cartilage
Diarthrodial (freely movable synovial) joints
- Known as synovial joints
- Contains a joint capsule
- Sleeve like covering of ligament tissue that surrounds the boney ends that form the joint
- Secretes synovial fluid to lubricate the joint cavity
Synovial fluid
Contains nutrient rich elements albumin & hyaluronic acid
- absorbs shock
- have motion in one or more planes
Arthrodial (glidin, plane) joint
Two flat, plane, boney surfaces that butt against each other limited gliding movement
Ex- carpal bones of the wrist
Condyloid (ellisiod, ovoid, biaxial, ball & socket) joint
Bone permit movement in two planes without rotation
Ex- wrist between the radius & proximal row of the carpal bones
Enarthrdial (spheriodal, multiaxial ball & socket) joint
•permits movement in all planes
Ex- shoulder and hip
Ginglymus (hinge) joint
•Permits a wide range of movement in only one plane
Ex: elbow, ankle, knee
Sellar (saddle) joint
Type of reciprocal found (Only) in the thumb at the carpometacarpal joint
•Permits ball & socket movements with the exception of slight rotation
Trochoid (pivot, screw) joint
Type of joint with rotational movement around a long axis
Ex: radioulnar joint
