Neuromuscular Fundamentals Flashcards
2 major types of muscle fiber arrangements
Parallel fibers arranged parallel to the length of the muscle
-Produce a greater R.O.M
Flat muscles
Usually thin and broad, creating a fibrous sheet like aponeuroses
Ex: rhomboids
Fusiform muscles
Spindle shaped with a central belly that tapers to tendons
Ex: brachioradials
Strap muscle
Described as triangular or fun shaped. A combination of flat and fusiform
Ex: trapezius
Radiate muscles
Described as triangular or fun shaped a combination of flat and fusiform
Ex: trapezius
Sphincter muscles
Never ending strap muscles that surround openings
Ex: orbicularis oris
Pennate muscle
Have shorter fibers that are arranged obliquely from a central tendon (like a feather)
Unipennate
Muscle fibers run obliquely from a tendon on one side only
Ex: semiteninosis
Bipennate
Both sides like a feather
Ex: rectus femors
Multipennate
Muscle fibers have several tendons with fibers running diagonally between them
Ex: deltoid
