-the child will be on life ong injections
-usually bd dose, with short and int acting allow for 24 hr cover
-better left til this way until teenage, then accept 4 injections

who injects?

-advice both parents, and older sibling in case parent sikc absent
-undestand how and when to give glucogon
-paed unit staff and educators will ensure that parents draw insulin and administer confidently
-if necessary arrange help home

monitoring?

-measure several times day with glucometer
-levels assessed b4 meals and b4 bed
-allows clinician and parent to assess blood sugar and recognise if adjustment needed.
-adjusted based on reading over several days rather than one.

school liaison?

-advice parents to inform school of his diagnosis
-ward diabetic educator will visit the school after discharge
to instruct school staff important features of complications, most likely hypoglycaemia and how to detect and treat.
-parent take opportunity to review these aspects and new staff made aware
-phone number parent, gp, hospital ward given to school in emergency, ambulance
