Frequency fallen from 1:500 to 1:1000
peak incidence around 4/12
no certain causes known
overwhelming infection can be, but sniffles not a reason
immediate mx following death due to apparent SIDS
-POLICE AND CORONER must be informed by law because cause unknown
-role of police officer is to assist coroner-police required to interview people involved including GP.
-Autopsy neccessary all cases : done by pathologist, find out cause
-tissues removed for further examination
-offer to contact coroner or advice coronor offcie to contact her regarding further
-offer to contact family member for support of mother
-coroner will decide on if an inquest needs to be held, but SIDS generally not necessary
-offer to contact local SIDS group
