Type 1 and Type 11 errors/probability Flashcards
1
Q
What is a type 1 error?
A
- A type 1 error is when the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted.
- This is often called an optimistic error or a false positive error
2
Q
When are type 1 errors more likely to occur?
A
- this is likely if the significance level is too lenient at 10 percent rather than 5 percent
3
Q
what is a type 11 error?
A
- the reverse of a type 1 error where the null hypothesis is accepted when in reality, the alternative hypothesis is true
4
Q
Why are type 11 errors more likely to occur?
A
- when the researcher uses a more stringent probability level at 0.01
5
Q
What are levels of significance used for?
A
- levels of significance are the point at which the researcher can claim to have discovered a large enough difference to claim an effect has been found
- This is normally 0.05
6
Q
what is a null and alternative hypothesis?
A
Null = states there is no difference between the two conditions
Alternative = states there is no difference between the two conditions
