R: tegmen typmani (part of the petrous temporal bone; middle cranial fossa)
-thin plate of bone is the only major barrier that separates infection in the tympanic cavity from the temporal lobe of the cerebral hemisphere
F: Jugular wall
-the tympanic nerve (branch of CN IX) pierces the floor to enter the tympanic cavity
A: Carotid wall
- 2 openings: tesnor tympani, auditory tube
- carotid canal (contains ICA)
P: Mastoid wall
- pyramid (below aditus) houses the STAPEDIUS muscle
- the main stem of FACIAL NERVE descends within the facial canal immediately adjacent to the posterior wall
- small opening inferior to the pyramid tramins the CHORDA TYMPANI NERVE
M: labyrinthine wall
- promontory, oval window (fenestra vestibuli), round window (fenestra cochlae)
- geniculate ganglion and greater petrosal nerve (facial nerve)
L: tympanic wall
- superior part: epitympanic recess
- inferior part: eardrum
