Turning Flashcards
How can traditional milling machines be controlled?
By moving each axis manually
What happens as you move each axis with a stepper motor?
Accurate movements can be controlled using CNC one of the most common forms of CAM
What does CNC stand for?
Computer Numerical Control
What does turning involve?
Rotating the work against a blade
How can the cutter be moved?
Left and right (x)
Backwards and forwards (y)
What different types of tools are used for turning?
Roughing tools Knife tools Round nosd tools Parting tools Boring tools
What can a tailstock be used for?
To support long pieces of material or fitted with a drill chuck for drilling holes into the end of the material
What happens on a wood-turning lathe?
Tool is rested on a support and guided by hand
Work can be held between centres or screwed onto a faceplate
What are the four different types of tools used for wood turning?
Skew chisels
Gouges
Parting Chisels
Scrapers
How can the movements of the work and the cutting tools be controlled on centre lathes?
Using stepper motors which allows the lathe to be numerically controlled
What are CNC lathes particularly useful for?
Turning quantities of identical pieces
