Plastics Flashcards
What are examples of Natural Plastics?
Including materials eg. amber and latex
What are the two main sources plastics are created?
Natural and Synthetic
What are Synthetic Plastics?
By far the most common and chemically manufactured from carbon based materials eg. coal, oil and gas
How are Synthetic Plastics manufactured?
Polymerisation
What is Polymerisation?
When monomers join together to form long chains of molecules called polymers
What are the two different types of Plastics?
Thermosetting Plastics
Thermoplastics Plastics
What are Thermosetting Plastics?
Heated and Moulded into shape
Can’t soften if reheated
Why can’t Thermosetting Plastics soften if reheated?
Because polymer chains become interlinked during the moulding process
What are Thermoplastics?
Soften when heated and can be shaped when hot
What is Post Forming?
Thermoplastic will harden when it’s cooled but can be reshaped if heated up again
What factors should you consider when choosing a plastic for a specific purpose?
Colour Texture Workability Structural Strength Whether it can be recycled Thermoplastic or Thermosetting
