What did the migrants do as jobs, and why were they available?
Started off in farming due to agricultural background,
But turned to factories and construction due to better pay.
These jobs weren’t taken by locals as they were dirty low skilled and poorly paid jobs
What did the migrants sacrifice to save money?
The migrants lived in poor accommodations, skipped meals and used public transport to get to work
Why did the turkes stay and what happened after?
Salarys were high compared to turkey salary
By 1980’s over 3% of the west german workforce was Turkish
What where the Sakaltutan advantages?
Reduces pressure on jobs and local resources
Birth rate lowered as people of childbearing age left
Money sent back home, approx 50% of Sakaltutans income was from overseas
Migrants developed new skills and brought it back home
What were the disadvantages on Sakaltutan?
People with skills and education mostly left
People of working age left leaving elderly High death rate
Mainly males migrate separating families
Long term: county becomes dependant on overseas income
Advantages for Pforzheim?
Labour shortage is solved, especially dirty, poor paid jobs
Cheaper labour for less desirable jobs
Cultural advantages discover new foods/music
Migrants are more economically active, desire to work
Disadvantages for Pforzheim?
Germany resent Turkes when unemployment rises
Cultural clashes
Turkes feel discriminated against by police and racial tensions
Migrants may drain local resources
Migrants mainly male leading to social problems
