Turgor Pressure and Tropisms Flashcards
What is turgor pressure?
water pressure inside a plant’s cells
where in the cells is the water stored?
in vacuoles
What are the terms for lots of or not enough turgor pressure?
A lot: turgid
Not enough: flaccid
What does an increase in turgor pressure cause?
It causes a seed coat to split so the seedling can emerge/grow
What direction does the water go in cells?
it pushes out in all directions
What is a positive tropism?
an organism moving toward the stimulus
ex. a plant grows toward a light source
What is a negative tropism?
an organism moving away from the stimulus
ex. a plant grows against gravity
What parts of plants are negative and positive tropisms?
Roots are positive- move with gravity
Stem is negative- move against gravity
What is phototropism?
Photo- light
-organisms respond to light
What is auxin?
The plant hormone that causes plants to bend
What is geotropism?
Geo- earth
-organisms respond to gravity
What is hydrotropism?
Hydro- water
-organisms respond to water
What is thigmotropism?
Thigmo- touch
-organisms respond to touch
