Excretory and Integumentary Systems Flashcards
What is the function of the excretory system?
filter waste from the blood
What do the kidneys do?
- filter blood that has collected waste from cells
- urea is TOXIC!
- remove urea by making urine
What are nephrons?
Tubes within kidneys help filter blood and remove waste

kidneys -> ureters -> bladder -> urethra
What is the bladder’s special function?
bladder’s function is to expand, allowing more waste to fit
What are the filters of the excretory system?
the kidneys
What are the 4 functions of the integumentary system?
- protect the body from germs
- regulate body temperature
- remove waste through pores
- sense external stimuli
What are the 3 layers of the skin?
epidermis
dermis
subcutaneous tissue
Characteristics of the epidermis:
- surface layer
- has dead skin cells

Characteristics of the dermis:
- middle layer
- contains blood vessels + nerves + muscles + oil/sweat glands
Characteristics of the subcutaneous tissue:
- fatty tissue
- insulates body
- stores energy
What are the 2 structures of the integumentary system and what do they do?
Hair: helps protect skin from UV rays and keep the body warm
Nails: used for protection, scraping, and manipulating objects
