Muscular and Skeletal Systems Flashcards
What are the functions of the muscular system?
- movement
- strength
- heat production
What are the types of muscle tissue?
- cardiac
- skeletal
- smooth
What do smooth muscle tissue in the stomach do?
churn and mix food
What are the functions of the skeletal system?
- framework for the body
- protects internal organs and tissue
- produce new red blood cells in bone marrow
- storage site for minerals: calcium and phosphorus
What is periosteum?
covering outside bones that supplies them with blood, nerves, and cells that help them grow and heal
What is the compact bone?
has special elastic fibers to help with flexibility and absorb shock
What is the spongy bone?
interior region of bone, contains many tiny holes –> makes bones lightweight
What is cartilage?
a thick, smooth layer of tissue at the end of bones
What are ligaments?
tough bands of tissue that hold bones together at joints (bone - bone)
What are tendons?
strong connective tissues that connect muscles to bone
What is the pivot joint and examples?
- one rotates in the ring of another
ex: pivot joints in the neck allow the head to rotate
What is the ball and socket joint and examples?
- one bone has a rounded end that fits into a cuplike cavity on another bone
ex: shoulder and hip (butterfly stroke)
What is the hinge joint and examples?
- has a back and forth movement
ex: elbows, knees, fingers, and toes. kicking a soccer ball
What is the gliding joint and examples?
- one part of the bone glides over another bone
ex: ankles and wrists
