Adaptation Flashcards
What are the types of adaptations?
structural and behavioral
8 examples of structural adaptation
- mimicry
- camouflage
- teeth
- body coverings
- hollow bones in birds
- gills in fish
- xylem
- phloem
3 examples of behavioral adaptations and examples of each
- learned behaviors
ex. riding a bike, dog running to the door to open it - seasonal migration/periodic movement
ex. birds moving south for winter - hibernation –> is an instinct
ex. bears hibernating in winter
What do hollow bones in birds do?
Allow the birds to be lighter and able to fly
What do gills in fish do?
allow fish to filter oxygen out of the water so that fish can breathe
What does the xylem do?
allow land plants to transport water far above-ground to plant structures
What does the phloem do?
carries food (sugars)
What are learned behaviors?
come from experience, not inheritable and must be taught or learned
What are migratory seasonal/periodic movements?
in response to changes in climate or food
What is hibernation?
period of inactivity in order to conserve energy
animals body processes, like breathing, slow down and they survive on stored food/fat
