Tubes Flashcards
Yellow, sterile
Tests: blood cultures
Additives: SPS to inhibit phagocytosis
Specimen: whole blood
Note: use to recover microorganisms causing blood infection
Light blue
Tests: Coagulation tests
Additives: sodium citrate
Specimen: Plasma
Note: fill tube completely
Red(glass)
Tests: chemistry, serology, blood bank
Additives: none
Specimen: serum
Note: 60 minutes to clot
Red(plastic)
Tests: chemistry, serology, blood bank
Additives: clot activators
Specimen: serum
Note: 60 minutes to clot
Gold/Tiger speckled
Tests: most chemistry tests
Additives: clot activators, polymer gel
Specimen: serum
Note: also called serum separator tubes (SSTs)
Green
Tests: stat/routine chemistry tests, ammonia, electrolytes, ABGs, depending on heparin additive
Additives: sodium heparin, lithium heparin, or ammonium heparin
Specimen: plasma
Light green/Green gray
Tests: stat and routine chemistry tests
Additives: heparin, polymer gel
Specimen: plasma
Note: also called plasma separator tubes (PSTs)
Tan
Tests: lead analysis
Additives: heparin
Specimen: plasma
Note: contains less than .1 mcg/mL of lead
Royal blue
Tests: toxicology, trace metals, nutritional analysis
Additives: heparin, EDTA, or none
Specimen: plasma or serum
Note: tubes are chemically clean, special stoppers don’t release contaminates
Lavender
Tests: CBC, sed rate, routine immunohematology testing
Additives: EDTA
Specimen: whole blood
Note: K2 EDTA spray dried onto tube sides
Pink
Tests: blood bank compatibility test
Additives: K2 EDTA
Specimen: plasma or whole blood
Note: similar to lavender, but pink is used by blood banks
Gray
Tests: lactic acid, glucose tolerance test, fasting blood sugar, blood alcohol levels
Additives: iodoacetate or sodium fluoride(antiglycolytic)
Specimen: plasma
Note: iodoacetate preserves glucose for 24 hours
sodium fluoride preserves glucose for 3 days
Orange/Yellow gray
Tests: stat chemistry
Additives: thrombin
Specimen: serum
Note: 5 minutes to clot, used for patients on anticoagulant therapy
Black
Tests: sed rate
Additives: buffered sodium citrate
Specimen: whole blood
Note: fill tube completely, often done with lavender instead
Pearl
Tests: viral loads
Additives: polymer gel with EDTA
Specimen: plasma
