Aerterial Collection Flashcards
Comp of arterial blood
- rich in oxygen/electrolytes
- used for ABGs, ammonia, and lactic acid
ABG tests
- measures concentrations of oxygen, CO2, and pH
- measures gas exchange ability of lungs and buffering capacity of blood
PO2
partial pressure of oxygen, absolute amount of oxygen
PCO2
partial pressure of carbon dioxide, absolute amount of co2
Lower PO2 and higher PCO2 means what?
impaired gas exchange in lungs
High pH mean what?
alkalosis
Low pH means what?
acidosis
Normal pH range
7.35-7.45
Normal PO2 rangee
80-100 mmHg
Normal PCO2 range
34-45 mmHg
Normal O2 saturation
97%-100%
Normal Bicarbonate
22-26 MEq/L
Why are arterial needles heparinized?
to prevent coagulation
Brachial/radial artery needle size
1 inch
Femoral artery needle size
1 1/2 inch
What antiseptics are used for arterial punctures?
alcohol and povidone iodine
Collateral circulation
collection site receives blood from more than one artery
Modified Allen Test
-tests for collateral circulation
1.extend wrist, make fist
2.compress ulnar and radial arteries
3.open and close first repeatedly
4.release ulnar, observe palm color
5.negative-no palm color appears
positive-color appears in 5-10 seconds
Capillary gas testing
- CBG alternative to ABG
- mix of capillary, venule, arteriole blood, and tissue fluid
- pediatric heel stick
- warm site 40 C-42 C for 5-10 minutes
- collected in heparinized glass pipet, insert metal filling called a flea
- fill tube and seal both ends
Embolism
vessel blockage, air bubble, or artery clot
