Departments Flashcards
Blood bank/Immunohematology
deals with blood used for transfusions
Chemistry
performs tests on the chemical components of blood as single tests or groups called chemistry panels
Specimen Processing
centrifugation to spin sample at high speeds to separate components based on density
Coagulation and Hemostasis
tests are done mostly to monitor anticoagulant therapy
and aid in diagnosing clotting disorders
Hematology
analyzes clotting ability of blood and for evidence of diseases affecting the blood forming tissues and cells produced by those tissues:
RBCs, WBCs, and platelets
Flow cytometry
analytic technique used in hematology, immunology, and anatomic pathology to identify cellular markers of WBC surfaces
for AIDS and HIV
Microbiology
isolates and identifies pathogenic microorganisms and determines a pathogenic organism’s susceptibility to specific antibiotic treatments
Molecular Diagnostics
used to diagnose genetic disorders, analyze forensic evidence, track disease, and identify microbiological pathogens
Serology/Immunology
evaluates patients immune response through detection of antibodies
Urinalysis and Clinical Microscopy
assess kidney disease and metabolic disorders that alter levels of substances in the urine
assess feces and other body fluids
Phlebotomy
responsible for collection of blood samples from inpatients and outpatients
Referrals
handles and ships specimens for any tests not done by the lab
