TS - Mise-en-scene Flashcards
Where was Trainspotting shot?
External locations were shot in Edinburgh - the high rise flats are located in an area known as Leith
Why was Leith chosen to shoot trainspotting?
It was chosen to highlight a forgotten Scottish underclass who live in extreme poverty and social deprivation. These shots are juxtaposed by capitalist areas of London
What does the juxtaposition between Leith and London indicate?
This suggests the characters hold anti-capitalist ideologies. London is the centre of the UK whereas Edinburgh is ignored and neglected
What do the internal settings communicate to the spectator?
Trainspotting utilises set design to inform the spectator about the desperation of drug abuse
How is hyperrealism created during the ‘Worst Toilet in Scotland’ sequence?
Via mise-en-scene the toilet is covered in dirt and overexaggerated filth alongside the low key lighting together with full lighting to create a dark and gloomy effect which heightens the sense of disgust and nauseating emotional response
What is hyperrealism?
A term coined by French philosopher Jean Baudrillard and means something is ‘more real than real’
