It is a period of time after modernism. In the 70s onwards there was reflection on endless progress being flawed and grand-narratives being questioned causing a reflection backwards on society and its arts

George Romero’s zombie genre cycle - more specifically Dawn of the Dead. But there are also references to the deer hunter and every which way but loose

In the aftermath of 9/11 which is reflected in the films anarchic tone as Shaun regularly suggests he would like to ‘wait for the whole thing to blow over’ which is typical of the Western world as many longed to return to the status quo
How is the aftermath of 9/11 represented in SOTD?
London is visually apocalyptic, anarchy ensures and although the government, in the form of militiary, does eventually save the day, individuals are required to cooperate first
What can the film be read as?
A satire of modern life in the UK - it is also a cult film seen in its transgressive material, quotable script, faced paced editing and ubiquity of merchandising still available.
What is Wright’s style of filmmaking and what was it influenced by?
He has a ‘kinetic style of filmmaking; involving numerous crash zooms and whip pans as well as a hectic editing pace which is clearly influenced by the digital revolution
