Truth Tracking Flashcards
What is the tripartite view of knowledge?
The view that knowledge is justified true belief.
What are Gettier Cases?
Cases in which a subject holds a justified true belief but does not have knowledge.
What are false lemmas.
False beliefs that are used to form other beliefs.
What are the four conditions for knowledge proposed by Nozick?
S knows that p iff:
- p is true
- S believes p
- if p weren’t true, S wouldn’t believe p
- when p is true, S believes p
What is reliabilism?
The idea that knowledge must be formed in a reliable way, one that makes it likely to be true.
What is closure under known implication?
The principle that says:
- if you know that p
- if you know that p entails q
- then you know that q
What are Mercier’s conditions for a criterion of truth?
A criterion of truth should be:
- Internal (available to conscious reflection)
- Objective (not just a subjective feeling)
- Immediate (directly applicable to beliefs)
What is externalism?
The idea that knowledge can be based in states of affairs that the knower is unaware of.
What is safety?
A replacement for Nozick’s third condition proposed by Sosa. It says:
When S believes p, p is true
On this analysis, you do know that you are not a brain in a vat.
