Problems with Externalism Flashcards
What is Samantha the Clairvoyant?
A case proposed by BonJour to attack externalism. It describes a clairvoyant who believes they are a clairvoyant without good evidence before or against this. Due to their clairvoyance, they correctly believes the president is in New York. They believes this in the face of overwhelming evidence that the president is in DC. Externalists may say that their belief is justified.
What is Norman the Clairvoyant?
A case proposed by BonJour to attack externalism. It describes a clairvoyant without good evidence before or against this power. Due to their clairvoyance, they correctly believe the president is in New York. They have no other evidence for or against this belief. Externalists may say that their belief is justified.
What is the goal of cognition?
At a minimum, the goal is to have true beliefs.
What is deontology?
The idea that we have an intellectual duty to do what we can to attain the goal of cognition. We, therefore, must only hold beliefs that we have “adequate reason to think are true”. The only way one can see whether an agent is fulfilling their duties is from their own point of view. This view tends to be internalist.
What is doxastic voluntarism?
The idea that we can freely choose what beliefs to form/
What is consequentialism?
The idea that a belief-forming process is good inasmuch as it helps us achieve the goal of truth. Therefore, we should use reliable methods for forming our beliefs. We evaluate agents from an outside point of view. This view tends to be externalist.
