Q

why was new york bankrupt in the 70s?

A

Many in the middle class left NYC because their quality of life deteriorated, in large part because Mayor Lindsay had severely reduced sanitation services and police patrols in their neighborhoods, moving to the suburbs.

Many of the most stable middle class neighborhoods in the Bronx and Queens were built up just before the Great Depression and, as the original occupants became empty nesters, many retired to Florida, vacating rent controlled apartments. As their children graduated from high school or college, many left for jobs outside NY. NYC was a manufacturing powerhouse, especially clothing, electronics, plastics, pianos, and I’m sure many other industries, but in the ‘60s, these industries moved to other parts of America, esp. the Sun Belt, and to other countries, where they were able to take advantage of very favorable incentives and to build modern, much more efficient factories.

Q

Why did trump want to take over the Commodore hotel?

A

He had a plan to strip the Commodore down to its bones, rebuild it for $100 million, and get the Hyatt corporation—which then owned no Manhattan hotels—to run everything. All he needed in return was a sweetheart sale price from the railroad—under $10 million—and a 50-year tax abatement from the city. Trump argued that if he was not allowed to take over the hotel, the Commodore would be “boarded up,” becoming not just an eyesore on 42nd Street, but a potent symbol that New York had hit rock bottom.
