Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj Flashcards
What percentage of voters actually voted?
More Americans voted in 2020 than in any other presidential election in 120 years. About 67% of eligible voters cast ballots this year, but that still means a third did not. That amounts to about 80 million people who stayed home.
How does plurality voting work?
In single-winner plurality voting, each voter is allowed to vote for only one candidate, and the winner of the election is the candidate who represents a plurality of voters or, in other words, received the majority of votes.
How many votes did Donald Trump receive?
Donald Trump received approximately 46.8% of the popular vote in the 2020 United States Presidential Election.
What is the negative partisanship theory?
Utilizing parallelism, the theory of negative partisanship implies that voters do not need to identify with one party (i.e. the in-group) to feel aversion toward the opposing party (i.e. the out-group).
What is ranked choice voting?
Ranked-choice voting is an electoral system in which voters rank candidates in order of preference, rather than simply selecting a single candidate. In a ranked-choice voting system, voters are able to rank as many candidates as they like, and if no candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. The votes of those who chose the eliminated candidate as their first choice are then redistributed to their second-choice candidate, and this process continues until one candidate receives a majority of the votes. Ranked-choice voting is intended to ensure that the winning candidate has broad support from voters, and to eliminate the need for costly and time-consuming runoff elections. It is used in a number of jurisdictions around the world, including some cities in the United States.
