Tropical Cyclones Flashcards
Adiabatic Heating
when air descends and compresses, resulting in very little precipitation.
Adiabatic lapse rate
rate at which temp of air parcel changes in response to compress/expansion associated with elevation change, under assumption that process is adiabatic, i.e., no heat exchange occurs between the given air parcel and its surroundings.
Coriolis force
A force due to rotation of earth results in deflection of winds+ocean currents. Deflection right in NH left in SH
Dissipate
Is to break up or disappear or weakening
Eye
calm area at centre of tropical cyclone
Eyewall
walls of cumulonimbus cloud that surround eye of tropical cyclone.
Latent heat
heat/ener that absorbed/released during phase change of substance. Either G-L or L-S
Make landfall
term to describe arrival of eye of a tropical cyclone over coast.
Storm surge
abnormal rise of water along coast associated with LP system as a tropical cyclone.
Tropical Cyclone
A powerful, rotating storm system, around a low-pressure cell which develops over a warm ocean between the tropics, the eye moves over land.
Tropical cyclone landfall
A tropical cyclone is classified as making a landfall when centre of storm moves across coast, in strong tropical cyclones.
Vortex
A mass of spinning air that attracts more air to its centre.
