Q

How are soils formed

A
  1. Weathering of parent material breaks down rock to form regolith
  2. Addition of water and decaying /organic material forms true soil. This results in soil layering.

Q

Soil Forming Factors

A

Parent Material - when soil devs from underlying rock, supply of minerals dependent on parent rock.
Relief/Aspect - direc of slope face. Will affect surface runoff
Climate - Moisture, temp + wind. Most rapid formation is hot + humid places
Organisms - Greater vegetation = greater organic matter = more fertile soils.
Time - Matures soils. Depends on the time taken for the bed rock to be weathered.

Q

Water Erosion

A

In a thunderstorm each raindrop acts as tiny bomb and displaces soil. Think of splash mass movement

Overgrazing

A

Vegetation cover removed by animals due to lack of food and erosion occurs

16
Q

Ploughing against contour

A

Ploughing up+down slope, ⊥ to contours increases run off making it easier for rainwater to remove soil + form gullies and dongas

17
Q

Past + Present erosion

A

Soil erosion accelerated by humans

18
Q

Erosion Features

A

Donga(deep gully)
Rill erosion
Gully erosion
Sheet erosion

19
Q

On site effects of erosion

A

Lower soil quality, less fertile upper layers = less food production and food insecurity
